The new Epic & Era
posted by id* at 04:33 PM on October 20, 2008
For 2009 Specialized went out to create the lightest and fastest full suspension bike ever. And came away with a winner the first time out. Under Christoph Sauser the Epic became the first full suspension bike to win the UCI World XC Championship! Now we are working on getting the same bike Christoph rode available for everyone.
Take a look at our new microsite for more information on the Epic. It's available here: Specialized Epic
But don't just take our word for it. Check out what Outside Magazine has to say... they wanted to know what makes us tick at Specialized so they came to observe the whole process of designing and creating this new bike. Here's what they had to say...

The new Epics look awesome. I have just two small-ish problems with them, which both boil down to the fact that they are only available in carbon. First, I don't how many mortals can really ride a one-piece carbon mountain bike and sleep at night. My Gary Fisher HiFi has a carbon seat stay which I trashed in a crash earlier this summer. I felt fortunate, because the stay is a fully independent piece that can be ordered and replaced. I can't even imagine ditching a full-carbon steed on some of the trails I ride. Okay, so the rear triangle on the Expert and Marathon models are aluminum, but that's still a lot of carbon to break.
Second, being carbon-only puts the MSRP of these bikes somewhere north of the value of one of my cars and which isn't exactly a junker. I could have stretched the budget to purchase an Epic from 2008 or earlier, but there's no way I can swing it now. [Insert sad face here.]
